Before it drops out of your hand, you try juggling the yoghurt, butter, bananas and bread. You manage to put the items down on the cashier’s desk before anything hits the floor. Your hand moves quickly to your pocket, searches for the phone and pulls it out. You look at the number on the display and immediately know that it is about an interpreting assignment. Your thumb reaches for the green button on the screen, you swallow and say your name. The voice at the other end begins “Hello, I am Wolfgang from the asylum office and I am calling because I need an interpretation for English. Do you have time right now?”
Quickly you scan your surroundings: three people in front of you are queuing, the cashier sliding one product after another over the scanner. “This is going to take at least another 10 minutes”, you think. You hear your voice starting “To be honest...“ Then the voice on the other side of the phone cuts you off and insists „It is really urgent. I’ve tried calling everybody on the list. But it’s Thursday afternoon. You are the last person on my list.“

He starts explaining that there is not much time, since they lost a lot of time finding an interpreter. Therefore, everything has to be short and quick. You start translating but he cuts you off “Not necessary to translate, I told you, we need to be quick.”
